Wattan’s Editorial Policy Stands Firmly against any Form of Hate Speech

A Clarification to our Supporters, Partners and Readers

Date: August 25, 2016
At Wattan, we cherish the trust our supporters, readers and partners place in us to provide an accurate and vivid account of the world. That’s why we acted immediately when we found out that an article with anti-Semitic and Holocaust-denying content had been published on our site in a gross violation of our editorial policy. The article was submitted by an external writer and, also contrary to our editorial policy, posted by one of our new editors.
We at Wattan believe in the right of freedom of expression and free speech and we encourage our readers to share their opinions on our website. However, Wattan does not tolerate hate speech or dismissal of well-documented atrocities, including the denial of the Holocaust, a heinous crime against humanity.
A recent submission appeared on our outside contributors’ website corner by an Egyptian writer, which had elements of anti-Semitism content. The article contradicts our editorial policy which stands against hate speech in all its forms. In August 22, 2016, soon after, the piece was taken down from Wattan’s website and a correction and an apology was posted to our readers.
In keeping with values of accuracy, integrity and fairness, we do not hesitate to correct a significant error when we have been able to establish that one has occurred. This is essential for our credibility with our supporters, readers and partners.
Even a single article denying the Holocaust or containing similar hate speech is one too many, and Wattan apologizes for its publication. It was a grave error that must not happen again.
As a consequence, Wattan has with immediate effect, terminated the contract of the editor responsible for publishing the piece. Our editorial policy was and is clear on the matter of hate speech, and we have used this case to emphasize to all our journalists, editors and employees that we have a zero tolerance policy on the matter of hate speech and failure to meet our standards of accuracy and truth in reporting.
In the case of any doubt about whether a piece meets the standards of our editorial policy, the approval of the editor-in-chief must be obtained before posting any submission from external writers on Wattan’s website.
Wattan is proud to be an independent and secular provider of credible, unbiased and timely media content and to contribute to the openness and cultural diversity of Palestine. Despite a number of incitements by various parties during the past decade, Wattan continues to strive to provide various parties with a platform for the general public to be heard with the strict caveat that any publication must meet our editorial policy and steer clear of hate speech
